Cucumbers

Cucumbers are grown throughout Fukushima Prefecture, which boasts the highest cucumber harvest in the country during the summer and fall seasons. Known for their juicy texture and satisfying crunch, cucumbers are a summer staple. While they are now available year-round thanks to advancing cultivation techniques, there’s still nothing like a fresh summer cucumber. Being located close to major consumption areas allows Fukushima to deliver freshly harvested produce straight to the dining table, which is its greatest appeal.

Benefits of Cucumbers

●Cucumbers help eliminate waste products from the body and purify the blood.
●Cucumbers are 95% water, which helps to lower body temperature.
●Cucumbers are packed with potassium, which helps the body eliminate excess salt.
●Cucumbers are a diuretic.

Cucumber Tenno Festival

The primary cucumber-growing area of Sukagawa hosts a cucumber festival called the Kiuri Tenno-sai, or Cucumber Tenno Festival on July 14 ever year. People bring two cucumbers as an offering to the shrine, and then receive another one to home as a substitute for a protective talisman. It is said that eating the cucumber will keep the person healthy the whole year through.

More Vitamin C under the Skin and around the Seeds

When different parts of the cucumber were measured for vitamin C content, the highest levels were found between the centre of the fruit and the flowering tip, as well as around the seeds and just under the skin.
Vitamin C is an essential component in collagen production, and has recently been found to offer a host of preventative health benefits due to its antioxidant effects.

The Origin of Cucumbers

Cucumbers are thought to have originated around the southern part of the Himalayas (northern India). Seeds from round-shaped wild cucumbers have been found in this area. Nobody is exactly sure when cucumbers came to Japan, but they were gradually refined to the fresh-tasting vegetables that are grown all over the country today.

“Kyuri-Biz” Campaign

It’s a term created by JA Zen-Noh Fukushima, inspired by the “Cool Biz” campaign. They have been promoting cucumber consumption by creating posters for the “Kyuri-Biz”, or “Cucumber Biz”, campaign. Currently, a unified campaign is being carried out across the six prefectures of the Tohoku region.
