Seafood

The seas around Fukushima are characterised by a mixture of “Kuroshio”, the north-flowing warm currents meeting “Oyashio”, the south-flowing cold currents. This vibrant mixture gives rise to huge populations of plankton, drawing in the small fish that feed on them. These small fish, in turn, draw bigger fish, making the Fukushima coast a world-class fishing ground. Fishermen use a variety of methods to catch the seafood here, using roundhaul nets for bonito, bottom-trawling for flounders, greeneyes, octopus, and other bottom-dwellers, and seine trawling for fish like Japanese sandlance and whitebait. The delicious bounty from the Fukushima seas is a delight you don’t want to miss!

Mehikari (Greeneye)

Mehikari, also known as “Greeneye”, is a deep-sea fish characterised by its large, bright, green eyes. It’s not much to look at, but its light white meat, tender skin, and delicious flavour make it perfect for eating whole. Mehikari fish caught in Fukushima have a higher fat content, making them delicious no matter how they are prepared ; as sashimi, deep-fried, tempura-fried, or grilled.

Surf Clam

Surf clam is a large bivalve primarily found in the shallow waters off of Hokkaido and Tohoku. The surf clam caught in Fukushima Prefecture are known for having a particularly rich umami flavour. They’re popular as sashimi or in a classic local clam-and-rice dish called “Hokki-Meshi”. They’re also delicious as tempura, in curry... the list goes on and on.

Baked Sea Urchin

The sea urchin caught off the Fukushima coast are Northern Sea Urchin. They’re incredibly delicious raw, but steam-baking them in the shell brings out a rich, fragrant sweetness that is irresistible. This is a traditional local dish prepared by fishermen in their respective processing shops, where sea urchins are placed in shells by hand and steam-baked on small stones arranged in a pot. Each household adds its own unique touch, offering these delicacies as carefully crafted specialties.

Flounders

There are some fifteen different species of flounders caught in Fukushima, including Littlemouth and Stone Flounder. Roe-filled Slime and Marbled Flounder are particularly prized during their short season in December and January.
