Olive Flounder

Olive Flounder is one of Fukushima’s headlining seafood products. The flounders that live off Fukushima coast are an incredibly delicious and celebrated part of the prefecture’s signature “Joban Catch”. Prior to the Great East Japan Earthquake, these flounders would fetch 20–50% more than the market average at the Tokyo fish market.
As the catch of Olive Flounder in Fukushima Prefecture saw a significant decline in the early 1990s, the fisheries sector and the prefectural government united to focus on protecting small fish measuring less than 30 cm in length and nurturing juvenile fish for release through aquaculture, working diligently to increase the flounder population. As a result, Fukushima has become one of the leading production areas in Japan, boasting the third-highest catch in the country in 2007 and 2008.

After the Great East Japan Earthquake, the coastal fishing industry was suspended, allowing the flounder population to increase, and now only larger flounder are caught. And because the flounder caught each morning go to market the same day, Fukushima is only shipping out its freshest, most vibrant fish.

The Women Who Support Coastal Fishermen

Fukushima’s fishing industry is more than just the men who go out in fishing boats. As soon as the catch is hauled from the boat, it’s time for the women to take over. People here say, “the men bring the fish to shore; the women do the rest”. It means that the women are the ones who sort out the catch and decide what goes to market.
The coastal women of Fukushima are also active in revitalizing the local seafood industry, driving events, cooking workshops, and other efforts to promote regional cuisine in and out of the prefecture.
