Grapes

Fukushima has been growing grapes since they were first introduced in the southern part of the prefecture during the late 1800s. Today, they’re primarily cultivated in the north, where they were introduced during the first decades of the 20th century. Most of Fukushima’s grapes were used to make liqueur or juice at the time.
The Central and Aizu regions are the heart of grape-growing country today, with Central Region farmers introducing premium cultivars like Shine Muscat along with large-fruit varieties like Kyoho and Pione.
Takao grapes are considered rare due to the difficulty of growing them, making up just 0.3% of Japan’s table grape cultivation by area. However, they’re being actively researched and cultivated in the northern and Aizu areas of Fukushima, as of 2021 making up nearly half of the nation’s grape cultivation area.
Different grape varieties require different temperature ranges, so each growing region specializes in the type best-suited to its climate. Grapevines also need just the right amount of rainfall to develop properly and produce delicious fruit.
